Eating Out in Northern Portugal

Taste the port at a Porto Port House, drink some ice cold Sagres beer at a local bar, or simply savour the fresh pressed orange juice from the trees just outside the farmhouse. One of the local specialities you must try is a Francesinha, an enormous meat sandwich, topped with egg and cheese and smothered in a spicy beer sauce, truly delicious!

In the cities and larger towns, you will find a wide range of restaurants and bars, serving both international and local cuisine.  The prices can vary enormously, so if you are on a budget, look for where the locals eat, and perhaps choose the prato do dia (dish of the day). It is always worth checking out how much is in a portion, as sometimes these are huge, and one will easily be enough for two. Some restaurants also offer meia dose (half portion), which is also a good option and plenty for one.  Restaurants that are local to the farmhouse offer the more traditional Portuguese cuisine, delicious well seasoned and beautifully cooked meat, fresh salads, chips and rice.  In the list below we offer some recommendations that we have personally tried. Often these restaurants do not have websites, but where possible we have added in links to Trip Advisor so that you can read reviews and see locations. Local Places to Eat

    • Restaurante Da Azenha  Very near, just down in Porto Manso, opposite the church. Friendly owner, fabulous food, very reasonable. Ask Francisco for opening times and more information.
    • O Alpendre Fairly close, it is just outside Gove, driving towards Baiao. Lovely setting, great local food, reasonably priced.
    • Hotel Porto Antigua This is the yellow building that you can see across the river from the farmhouse. Slightly more upmarket and a bit more expensive; the dessert buffet is good though!

Top Tip: Ask Francisco for the Cinfaes Walking Maps guide. There is a QR code that you can scan that shows you many lovely local restaurants dotted around the Bestanca Valley. Amazing views and fantastic food too!

Further Afield

Not quite in the town, this is a perfect place to stop for lunch on your way to the farmhouse. Follow the directions from the A4, and just after you cross the river and before going right towards Resende there is a restaurant on the right hand side:

  • Albufeira  Nice easy parking alongside, lovely seafood and traditional Portuguese cuisine. Mid priced, very friendly waiters.

  • Manjar Do Douro This is a lovely friendly place with an extensive menu, mid price, and just on the left hand side as you look up at the Santuario Nossa Senhora dos Remedios!

There is also a lovely looking Pastelaria opposite, full of the most delicious pastries and cakes!

There are many restaurants in the old centre of the city, set amongst the historic Baroque buildings. We found a few along the same road as the indoor car park with great prices on the dish of the day.

Best ones we found were along the Rua de Janeiro, a narrow street, but backing onto the River Tamego, with outside balconies to enjoy the view.

Something for everyone here; international and local cuisine, snack bars, cafes, so many places to sit and watch the world go by! If you want to indulge yourself then you simply must head to:

  • The Majestic Cafe Open from 9.30 to midnight and serving coffee, cakes, breakfast, lunch, afternoon tea and many specialities, wonderful waiters, amazing decor from the 1920s.

If you want to listen to some Fado, traditional Portuguese music, you can head to a bar, or try the:

  • O Fado Restaurant This is a treat; it is quite pricey, but the service and food is excellent and the Fado exquisite. Your food bill covers that too, so we felt it worth it for the experience, at 130 euros for two. There is also a tourist menu at 37.5 euros each, if you are on a bit of a budget.
